Theology of human rights: The case of gay marriage in Iceland is the theme of a public lecture to be held on Tuesday from 5.30 to 7pm at Gateway Building Hall C at the University’s Msida campus, organised by the Department of Youth & Community Studies.

The speaker is Haukur Ingi Jónasson, an academic member of staff at the University of Iceland, who holds a doctorate degree in Psychiatry and Religion from the University Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University in New York besides considerable work experiences.

The topic of gay and lesbian rights has been of interest for the past few decades within theological circles. While society in general is increasingly recognising the rights of this minority group in question, religion continues to create various barriers to them.

This public lecture will discuss the issue of religion, besides explaining the rationale for legislation of gay and lesbian marriages in Iceland. Furthermore, these insights will be intertwined with a presentation of what can be called an integrated theology of human rights.
