Former PN leaders Eddie Fenech Adami and Lawrence Gonzi have declined to comment on the ‘gay marriage’ bill proposed by the government, and on which the Nationalist Party said it will vote in favour.

The bill, once approved by Parliament, will allow gay couples to enjoy civil rights similar to those of heterosexual couples, including the adoption of children.

The law currently states that any single individual or married couple can adopt children. Since the law does not state that the single parent has to be heterosexual, gay people can also apply to adopt. But, so far, they can do so on an individual basis, not as a couple.

The government published the bill last week and the Nationalist Party on Monday issued a statement saying it will be voting in favour and will also propose amendments.

Contacted by The Malta Independent, both Dr Fenech Adami and Dr Gonzi would not comment.

The Malta Independent (newspaper) will tomorrow be publishing a feature on the topic.
