A Labour government will set up a special consultative council to draft a law on civil unions, Labour leader Joseph Muscat said today.

The council will also make recommendations on other areas where gays, lesbians and transgender people feel discriminated against.

Dr Muscat said he was proud that a main political party was dedicating a whole chapter of its electoral programme to civil liberties, civil rights and equality.

During a meeting with representatives of the LGBT community, Dr Muscat said his government would have someone specifically politically responsible for the sector.

Dr Muscat said the law on transgender people, which has already been presented in parliament, will be enacted since there already is a "political commitment" on the part of the Labour Party.

Malta Gay Rights Movement spokeswoman, Gaby Calleja, said the movement wanted future governments to open up the In Vitro Fertilisation service to same sex couples. It also wanted to address lack of proper education in schools on gay issues and how teachers should be properly training to how to deal with these issues in schools.
