MGRM: Malta Gay Pride 2011: Saturday 9th July, 10:30 a.m. Valletta

30.6.2011

The Malta Gay Rights Movement would like to invite your organisation to Gay Pride March 2011. This year’s event will take place on Saturday 9th July 2011, gathering at 10:30am in St George’s Square, Valletta.

Pride is a symbolic manifestation which is held yearly in a large number of cities around the world. It aims to increase the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons and to underline their integral role in the societies where they live.

This year MGRM is celebrating its 10th anniversary, ten years of activism towards equality for the LGBT community, awareness raising and the provision of support services. Malta still lags behind many European countries in legislating for LGBT rights. In Europe 7 countries have introduced marriage equality while a further 13 have established registered partnerships. Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity in the provision of goods and services is banned in 29 countries. Malta is not one of them. The gender recognition of trans people is possible in 34 countries including Malta but only 7 of them do not require genital surgery and compulsory sterilization.

This is the eight consecutive year that MGRM is organizing its Gay Pride March as part of ‘Pride Week’, and your participation is a clear sign of your commitment to the respect for diversity and equality in Maltese society and around the world.
